Intertwined

Intertwined is a space and furniture design exploration that addresses how fast-paced modern environments limit opportunities for meaningful interaction with nature.
The project investigates the relationship between human well-being, urban space design, and our innate connection to the natural world.
Its outcome is a resting area for indoor public spaces that centers plant growth as the focal point to a constantly evolving design.

Objectives & Design Approach
My initial focus and research centered on a deeper exploration of how human feelings experienced in nature can be incorporated into everyday spaces and interactions. This led to a series of design considerations to shape my outcome:
Nature as a guiding element for the form and function of the space.
Focus on indoor public spaces because of the limited interactions with nature within them.
Work with a welcoming and adaptable scale that allows the structure to be introduced into various spaces.
Consider how materials used evoke and reflect experiences within nature.

The ideation and prototyping process was heavily influenced by fluid forms, movement patterns present in nature and ways in which we feel surrounded/protected by it.

Outcome
The final design presents a plantscape with a petal-like form that gently wraps around you. The form alone is not the main focus as it is only complete when nature is present and shaping the environment.
The platform’s design is inspired by the freedom of letting go; it does not dictate your seating/resting position, or how you should interact with it. Its scale was intentionally chosen to accommodate multiple people and passively foster community building.
